How to be a Happier Parent in Dubai

Being a parent is the hardest and most important job in the world. This is why we put so much time and energy into raising healthy and happy kids. Yet, we struggle to do things that make us happier parents and people. I'm here to tell you that happier parents tend to have happier kids. So, put the guilt aside, and start being a little kinder to yourself. Everyone in your life will thank you - and you'll be happier and healthier too!

Here are some of my top tips for being a happier parent in Dubai.

1. Trust your parental instincts

You are the best parent that your child could ask for, and no one knows your kids better than you do. Remember that. These days, we are surrounded by so much (conflicting and often unsolicited) parenting advice. Go with your gut - and have confidence in your decisions. You're much more likely to be a consistent and effective parent when you believe in what you're doing.

2. Aim for 'good enough', not perfect

Think back to your first pregnancy - you probably dreamed about being the perfect mom or dad. We quickly learn that there's no such thing as a perfect parent - and that's ok. The most important thing is that we do our best to connect with and support our kids. The sooner you embrace your imperfection, the better. Research shows that kids grow up to be more resilient and successful when they realize that failure is a part of life.

3. Practice self-care

Kids require a lot of time, energy, and patience. It's easier to be happy and calm parents when we have looked after our own individual needs. This is what self-care is all about. Make some time each day for yourself. It doesn't need to be time consuming or expensive (although maybe occasionally it can be!). Some simple ideas include hanging out with loved ones, learning something new, or stimulating your senses. Dubai - and the UAE - are full of amazing spas and resorts If you want to treat yourself to something a bit more extravagant.

4. Slow down and enjoy the moment

Life in the UAE is exciting, but it can be quite hectic too. Many of the parents I work with - myself included - have very full schedules. It's great to keep busy, but it's also important to slow down too. Carve out some time each day to just be. Take advantage of the beautiful Dubai weather by stopping to smell the roses - literally!

5. Ask for support when you need it... we all do sometimes!

Parenting is hard work. We all need a little support sometimes. Don't be ashamed to ask for help when you need it. Reaching out to your friends, family, or a trusted professional doesn't make you weak - it makes you human. Make sure to also ask your loved ones how they're really doing in case they need your support.
